Discover your Bottlenecks
Bottleneck discovery, also known as 'Pirate Funnel', can help you identify where you are stuck in your marketing channels and where you need to improve.
Overview
The Pirate Funnel Canvas is a tool derived from the Pirate Funnel model, commonly used by growth hackers to identify the weakest areas in a business that need attention.
The model is structured around the AAARRR framework, which breaks down a company's customer journey into six key stages: Awareness, Acquisition, Activation, Revenue, Retention, and Referral. By guiding customers through each of these stages and completing this framework, businesses can pinpoint gaps in their processes and areas for improvement.
Step-by-step instructions
Define your steps
Start by identifying what each step in the Pirate Funnel looks like for your business. How do you define and measure 'Activation'? What metric will you use to track it, and where can you find that data?Fill in the numbers
Open the tools you need and fill in your numbers per Pirate Metric. Make sure that you pick the same time duration for measurement (for example the last 28 days).
Find your bottleneck
In the last column, calculate the conversion rate between each step: What percentage of people move to the next stage? The lowest conversion rate reveals the weakest point in your funnel.
Focus your bottleneck
Once you’ve identified your bottleneck, focus your growth efforts there. This is the area where you’ll see the highest return on investment. Make this your One Metric That Matters for the next few weeks and begin rapid experimentation to improve it.
